Project 1

Project 1 Engineering and Design Class

Design, fabricate, and document an experiment to fly on the Zero-G plane in April, 2011. The experiment is to investigation how microgravity will affect their proposed ISS plant growth chamber.

Purpose

The plant growth chamber is proposed to fly on the ISS.  However, student explorations are to inspire the next generation of scientists.

Overview

The students are designing an aeroponics plant growth chamber which will operate within constrains of the ISS. This school year, students will investigate aspects of their plant growth chamber that may be affected by microgravity conditions. Twenty-three students are divided into the following groups: integration, plant viability, electrical (sensors), water system, and lighting.

Team

The Engineering and Design HUNCH team has students in the 3rd class period.

Status

The students are new this year to the project. Last year’s students flew on the Zero-G plane to test their watering system. This year in April 2011 students and the experiment successfully flew on the Zero-G plane to test the water system as well as the temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide levels within the plant growth chamber. At present the students are doing research and preparing PowerPoints to present on their topic.

Project 2

Project 2 Family and Consumer Science Class

Design, fabricate, and document an collapsable, and disposable glove box to fly on the Zero-G plane in April, 2011 and design and fabricate a protype crew quarters organizer.

Purpose

Astronauts are in need of a glove box that they can use one time when working with liguids that may spill into the glove box. Astronauts would like an organizer for their crew quarters that can efficiently store their personal items.

Overview

The students have been able to fly their protype glove box on the zero-g plane in April 2011 and it opened and collapsed well in microgravity conditions.  The students were able to fabricate 2 prototype crew quarter’s organizers.

Team

The team is made up of 2 classes of Family and Consumer Science.

Status

A prototype for both the collapsible glove box and the organizer for the crew quarters were successfully designed and fabricated.

Project

Machine the parts needed and assemble an International Space Station class III (Training Hardware) Single Stowage Locker.

Purpose

The locker will be used to train the International Space Station astronaut crew members on locker operations, payload housing and stowage.

Overview

The International Space Station Single Stowage Locker is assembled out of twenty-three (23) parts that the students will fabricate out of raw material.  Fifteen (15) of these parts will be made out of aluminum sheet.  Seven parts will be machined out of Aluminum billets.  The remaining part will be a modified from a commercial off the shelf hinge.  There are also numerous commercial off the shelf parts that will be included in the assembly i.e. rivets, latches and captive fasteners.

Team

The Clear Creek HS IT HUNCH team is students in two industrial technology classes, 2nd and 3rd period, that meets during class.  Vernon meets with the students every Thursday and Friday.
