North Shore Metal Tech

Project

Machine the parts needed and assemble an International Space Station class III (Training Hardware) Single Stowage Locker.

Purpose

The locker will be used to train the International Space Station astronaut crew members on locker operations, payload housing and stowage.

Overview

The International Space Station Single Stowage Locker is assembled out of twenty-three (23) parts that the students will fabricate out of raw material.  Fifteen (15) of these parts will be made out of aluminum sheet.  Seven parts will be machined out of Aluminum billets.  The remaining part will be a modified from a commercial off the shelf hinge.  There are also numerous commercial off the shelf parts that will be included in the assembly i.e. rivets, latches and captive fasteners.

Team

The North Shore HS IT HUNCH team is students in two industrial technology classes, 1st and 7th period, that meets during class and after school on Mondays.

Status

Fabrication: 1/1 rear plate 30% complete, 0/1 door complete, 0/1 hinge complete, 1/1 front frame 30% complete, 0/2 top/bottom panel complete and 0/2 left/right side panel complete.  Reference: 3/3 door panels are being made at Cy-Ranch. 12/12 tool guides are being made at Conroe HS 90% complete

Project 2

Project

Fabricate five (5) minute videos about different payloads that are flying on the International Space Station.

Purpose

To inspire the next generation of researchers by, fabricating short educational payload videos that science teachers in high schools and middle schools can show to their students.

Overview

Who better to relate to high school and middle school students then high school students?  Students are provided one to two hours of on-orbit video and a list of talking points.  They cut out interesting talk points and relate it to their age group, bringing out points on how this helps us on earth, or why it is easier to do this research in space, using students with clever banter to make it entertaining and engaging for both high school and middle school students.

Team

The Galena Park HS Media HUNCH team has students in the severalperiod working on this project.

Status

The students have been given feedback on BISA and have been able to produce excellent videos.
